While we prepare to celebrate Juneteenth, kids can learn about the holiday, its importance and its history with this free printable Juneteenth Word Search Puzzle.
Juneteenth is the celebration and commemoration of June 19, 1865 when enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally told they were free, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
On this date, Union general Gordon Granger read federal orders to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day and Juneteenth Independence Day has been celebrated in Black communities since the late 1800s and now it is celebrated across the United States with parades, festivals, cultural celebrations, food and music.
