Summer is here! If you were a little bit lax in lining up summer fun before the season got here, you might be listening to the kids complaining about being bored. Even if you are on a budget, that doesn’t mean that there is nothing to do. There are many free activities out there to keep the kids busy this Summer, no matter where their interests lie.
Here is a great list of 10 Free Activities to Keep Your Kids Busy This Summer and fill these long days with fun.
10 Free Activities to Keep Your Kids Busy This Summer
- Kids Bowl Free. There is a great program out there called Kids Bowl Free. Sign your kids up here and they will then qualify for 2 free games of bowling every day all Summer long. (taxes and shoe rental not included)
- Summer Reading Programs. Head on into your local library and sign your kids up for the Summer reading program. Not only is this great for keeping them busy, but it’s also a great way to keep your kids reading during the non-school months. Summer Reading programs often offer different performances and activities week to week. Plus, lots of kids come home with prizes and rewards for reading and participating.
- Park Trips. Neighborhood parks are free and just waiting for your kids to come and play. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon out of it.
- Have a backyard fire. Kids will love roasting marshmallows over an open flame.
- Lowe’s Build and Grow Clinics. If you have a Lowe’s Home Improvement nearby, consider signing your kids up for the Lowe’s Build and Grow clinics. These clinics allow the children to build a wooden project on their own, plus they get free gear! They will come home with a free apron, goggles and a patch! These clinics are usually held once or twice a month and you can sign your child or children up here.
- Visit your local beach, river or lake. Kids love the water in the Summertime. Pack a picnic and have a beach day with the family.
- Visit your nearest National Park. National Parks often offer fee free days to the public. This Summer it will be August 25 through the 28th in celebration of the National Park Service Birthday. Our National Parks are among some of the most beautiful places you can visit and these days are a great opportunity to do so without the cost.
- Find free outdoor concerts. Many communities offer free concert series’ during the Summer months. Most of these are family friendly groups or musicians and since they are outside, it is much easier on the little ones’ ears.
- Go trail hiking or biking. Look around at your local trails and find kid friendly ones that aren’t too long or steep. Then set out on an adventure exploring nature. (Many trails are bike friendly too, if your kids prefer biking over walking)
- Set up a Lemonade Stand. Let the kids be entrepreneurs for the day and have them set up their own lemonade stand. This is a fun way for kids to spend a hot afternoon, plus they can learn the value of their hard work.

These are all wonderful ideas! Some I never new or thought about. It feels like summer is flying by. We haven’t had the greatest weather this Summer.

Those are all great ideas! We stayed pretty busy this summer. We might try some of these activities when my grandsons have Fall Break at the end of Sept.
